Save positions, import, and export
You can build your Library from positions you capture, games you already have, or Studies you create directly in the app.
Save scanned positions
Use the Browser Extension for diagrams on websites, or the Mobile App for photos and images on your phone.
- Sign in with the Chessvision.ai account you use for Library.
- Scan the diagram and check the recognized position.
- Correct any misplaced pieces, the side to move, and castling rights in the scanner.
- Click or tap the star/save button to save the position to Library. This step is required for each scanned position you want to keep.
- Open Inbox in Library to find the saved diagram.
The Mobile App tutorial's saving instructions show how to use the star button.
Open a saved position, develop the continuation you want to learn, and move the Study into an appropriate Folder. If it does not appear, see Missing saved positions.
Scan an image directly in Library
- Click + New → Scan Picture, or use Scan from Picture in the sidebar.
- Choose an image containing a chessboard.
- Compare the predicted position with the image.
- Choose Create Study to keep it, or Analyze to explore it on the analysis board.
Check the pieces and whose turn it is before adding a continuation.
Import a FEN position
FEN describes a single board position, including the side to move and castling rights. It does not contain a game's move list.
- Click + New → Study and select From FEN.
- Paste the FEN, or use Setup to arrange the board.
- Name the Study and choose the side you want to practice.
- Click Create, then add the moves you want to explore.
For example, copy a FEN in the Browser Extension, or copy one from a game analysis board after reaching the position you want to revisit.
Import PGN games and variations
PGN stores chess games and can include variations and comments. Use it when you already have moves to bring into Library.
- Click + New → Study and select From PGN.
- Paste the PGN text into the input.
- Review the detected Studies. If the PGN contains several games, use the naming prefix option when helpful.
- Choose the destination, playing side, and relevant tags, then create the Studies.
Start with a small import and check the resulting board and variations. If the PGN is rejected, see PGN or FEN import problems.
Import diagrams from the eBook Reader
First connect the Reader to Library. Then choose From Reader when creating a Study, select a document, and set the page range to import.
This import requires an active eBook Reader subscription. Check the page numbering shown in the import form when selecting your range.
For help opening and analyzing your books, see the eBook Reader tutorial. You can also use the Reader's Study Creator to export selected diagrams as PGN, then import the PGN into Library.
Export Studies to PGN
Open a Study's name menu and choose Export to PGN when available. For a selection of Studies, use Library's selection mode and the Export Selected to PGN action.
PGN is useful for opening chess material in another compatible program. Treat it as an export of your chess material; do not assume it is a complete backup of Library-specific training history or settings.
To turn exported positions into printable exercises, see the PGN to PDF tool.
Next, organize your Studies or enable Flashcards.
