Library tutorial

This tutorial takes you from a new Study to your first Flashcard session in Chessvision.ai Library. Start with a short line you want to remember; you can add more variations later.

Watch how CM Han Schut uses Library

Chessable author CM Han Schut recorded this video to show how he uses Chessvision.ai Library. It focuses on his personal workflow and examples, rather than providing a comprehensive tutorial. For a step-by-step introduction, follow the written guide below.

Library starts at 7:04. Before that, Han covers Chessvision.ai in general and the eBook Reader. The video below starts at the Library section.

Watch how Han Schut uses Library on YouTube, starting at 7:04.

1. Create a Study

  1. Open Library and sign in.
  2. Click + New, then Study.
  3. Give the Study a name that describes what you want to learn.
  4. Choose your playing side under Study as.
  5. On From FEN, leave the position field empty to begin from the normal starting position.
  6. Click Create.

For a first exercise, use a name such as “My first opening line” and choose White. If you already have a position or game, see Import FEN or PGN instead.

2. Add the moves you want to remember

Play moves on the Study board to build a line. As a simple example, enter:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4

This is an example for learning the controls, not a complete opening repertoire. You can use a different line from your own games.

Go back to an earlier position and play another move to add a variation. Keep the first Study small enough that you can explain why you chose each move.

3. Add an explanation

Select a position and add a comment explaining the move or plan. For example, after 2. Nf3, you might write: “Develop a piece and attack the e5 pawn.”

Use the engine and opening explorer to investigate alternatives. When matching videos are available, you can watch an explanation and pin a useful video for later. See Working with Studies.

4. Enable Flashcards

Turn on Flashcards for the Study and choose Opening for this exercise. Check the playing side before enabling them.

The Study contains the material; Flashcards let you practice recalling it. For other kinds of positions, choose Tactic or Goal Flashcards.

5. Start training

  1. Open Flashcards.
  2. Find your Study and select its Flashcards.
  3. Click Start Training.
  4. Play the requested moves on the board.

Try to recall the idea before asking for a hint. If you repeatedly miss a move, return to the Study and improve the explanation before training it again.

See Training and spaced repetition for choosing due Flashcards and creating focused sessions.

6. Add something from your next game

After a game, choose one moment where you were unsure what to do. Insights can help you find gaps in your preparation and missed endgame opportunities. Add the missing opening response to a Study, or save a tactical or endgame position as a new one.

You now have a repeatable routine: review a game, prepare a useful response, and practice it before playing again. For a real example of this approach, read how Chessvision.ai's creator studied with Library on the way to 2000 on Chess.com.
