Learn from your games with Insights
Insights helps you use your own games to decide what to practice next. Review gaps in opening preparation and missed endgame opportunities, then turn a useful position into a Study and train it.
Review your games
- Connect your Chess.com or Lichess account if you have not already done so.
- Open Insights in Library.
- Check the game source and available filters so you are reviewing the games you intended.
- Choose one position to investigate and review what happened in the game.
Start with one useful lesson you can explain and practice before your next games.
Find gaps in your opening preparation
Opening Insights compares games with Studies tagged Opening. Add that tag to the Studies containing your repertoire; putting them in an Openings Folder alone does not identify them for Insights.
| Insight | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Out of Book | Review a move you played outside your prepared material. Was it intentional, or did you forget the line? |
| Unexpected Move | Investigate an opponent response you had not included and decide how to meet it. |
| Novelty | Consider whether a new continuation should become a branch in your Study. |

Use Go to Study to review existing preparation, or Add to Study when offered to bring in a missing continuation. Analyze the position and add your intended response before training it.
An unfamiliar move is not automatically a mistake. Insights helps you find gaps in preparation; the board analysis helps you decide what to do about them.
If you want to expand the relevant line, use Opening Builder. For help choosing which openings to prepare, see Opening Assistant.
Learn from missed endgame opportunities
Insights can also surface missed endgame opportunities. Review the relevant position, create a Study, and use Goal Flashcards to practice converting an advantage or reaching a satisfactory position.
Add a comment explaining the lesson you want to remember, such as activating your king or keeping an opposing passed pawn under control.
Turn a lesson into training
- Open or create a Study for the position you want to revisit.
- Analyze the position and add an explanation of the move or plan you want to remember.
- Choose Opening, Tactic, or Goal Flashcards: Opening for repertoire decisions, Tactic for a concrete combination, or Goal for a practical result.
- Start a training session and return to the Study if you cannot explain the answer.
After your next games, return to Insights and choose the next lesson to work on.
